Collaboration + Innovation = Energy Transition
2022 marks the 10th anniversary of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), an organization that thrives on a unique model of open innovation and collaboration amongst competitors. COSIA members, over the last decade, have made great strides in environmental performance improvement with over 1,100 innovation projects at a cost of more than $1.8 billion dollars.
Our members collaborate with researchers, innovators and scientists across Canada and around the world to advance technologies and knowledge in areas of greenhouse gases, land, tailings and water. Together, COSIA members have:
- Reduced freshwater use intensity by 47 per cent at in situ (in place) operations;
- Reduced net water use intensity from the Athabasca River by 36 per cent at mining operations; and
- Reduced greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 20 per cent (2009-2018).
But that’s not where innovation stops. COSIA members continue to collaborate and innovate every day, including through efforts to reach net zero emissions by 2050, in support of Canada’s broader climate goal.
A Unique Collaboration
As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, read this commemorative interview with COSIA’s Chair Brenda Leeds Binder who has been there since the beginning, including the early days of getting this globally unique collaborative venture off the ground. Here, she shares her perspective on members’ achievements through COSIA’s and what’s yet to come.
